To begin working a double crochet, wrap the yarn around the hook and insert the hook from front to back in the fourth chain from the hook.

 Yarn over the hook and draw this loop through (three loops on hook). Yarn over hook and draw loop through two of the loops on the hook (two loops remaining). Yarn over hook once more and draw through the two remaining loops. The second double crochet stitch has been made, with the skipped chains counting as the first double crochet stitch. Work in the same way to the end of the chain. The first row of double crochet has been made.

 Turn and chain 3, which will count as the first stitch. Skip the first double crochet of the previous row, and work one double crochet in the next stitch. Continue working doubles in each stitch to the end of the row, working the last double crochet in the top of the turning chain.
