Turning Chain
The turning chain creates the height of each new row. Turn your piece before you begin the turning chain so that your hook is at the beginning of each row, and you won’t be confused where to start the new row. A single crochet (sc) is one stitch high, so you will make one turning chain. For a half double crochet (hdc) you will make 2 chains; a double crochet (dc) is either 2 or 3 chains, depending on the directions.

Catch the yarn between the first and second fingers of your yarn hand with the tip of the hook, then draw this loop through the stitch on the foundation chain (two loops will be left on the hook). |

With the yarn around the hook, draw this loop through the two loops on the hook. One loop no remains on the hook. One single crochet stitch has now been made. |
